WASHINGTON (Catholic Online) - Pope Benedict XVI has been discharged after minor surgery at Umberto Parini hospital in Aosta. He had fractured his right wrist while vacationing in the Italian Alps. Doctors gave the Pontiff a local anesthetic and realigned the broken bone fragments.
According to a statement from the Vatican, the pope fell in his room in a nearby chalet overnight. In spite of the injury the Holy Father celebrated Mass and had breakfast before going to the hospital.
Tiziano Trevisan, a spokesman for the hospital reported that the operation was performed under local anesthesia and went well.
Pope Benedict, 82, was taken to the hospital by car on Friday morning to have his wrist checked. Earlier Friday morning, a Vatican spokesman told reporters that the Holy Father has slipped and hurt himself, but it was not serious.
The Pope was in good spirits as he left the hospital and returned to Les Combes.
