Fourth year of major drought forces state officials to scramble for solutions

Despite a few recent months with rainfall, California is still in the midst of a major drought, and California officials have approved a package of restrictions that are intended to help ease the growing shortage as the state enters into the early parts of its dry period.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - This new deal will restrict homes and businesses throughout much of California to two days of watering outdoors in a week; hotels and restaurants are also going to be scrutinized more about how they use their water and the amount they go through.

You can do good, you can make a difference. Please act today!

Previously, California allowed local water regulation agencies to run their own water conservation programs, which would be better able to deal with local demand and water requirements. However, California is entering into a fourth year of this major drought, and current conservation attempts have not been enough.

These new regulations carry fines up to $500 and add to restrictions that were put in place in 2014 to curb the amount of water use and will require local water agencies to enforce limits on the number of days a person can water their yard policy, if they did not already have such a limit in place previously.

Restaurants, bars and hotels are also facing new limits. Water can only be served to a guest upon request, and guests that are staying at a hotel for multiple nights must be asked if they want their linens and towels laundered.

These new regulations will take effect in late April or early May, following a review by a legal team. The regulations will be in place for 270 days while Water board officials contemplate making some or all the restrictions permanent.
